Skull defects from drill hole trepanation often lead to unwanted scalp depressions after craniotomies (skull operations). This cosmetical defect is often neglected by neurosurgeons as patients mostly recover quickly, but is not acceptable to the patient from a cosmetical view. Overmore skull depressions worsen over time when the swelling subsides at an early stage and atrophy of soft tissues starts at the late stage.
According to clinical studies (1) 73.9% of patients with scalp depressions have cosmetical inferiority complexes and 62,3% suffer from functional handicaps in daily activity such as hairdressing. This is why neurosurgeons should always consider not only neurological but also cosmetical and functional consequences of drill holes.
